Submersible robots hunt lice with lasers

laser-lice-removal-freatured.png

De-lousing is a trying agricultural process. It becomes a major problem in pens which contain the hundreds of thousands of salmon farmed by Norwegians — the world’s largest salmon exporter — an environment which allows the parasite to flourish. To tackle the problem, the Stingray, developed by [Stingray Marine Solutions],  is an autonomous drone capable of destroying the lice with a laser in the order of Read More → "Submersible robots hunt lice with lasers"

Google’s AI will take on the world’s top Go player next month

dims.jpg

AlphaGo can now justifiably be considered one of the world’s best Go players, but the Deepmind team can’t make a bonafide claim until its AI has beaten the world number one: 19-year-old Chinese player Ke Jie. Deepmind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis has now confirmed that after months of speculation, the match is on.

AI predicts the layout of human stem cells

The structures of stem cells can vary wildly, even if they’re genetically identical — and that could be critical to predicting the onset of diseases like cancer. But how do you know what a stem cell will look like until it’s already formed? That’s where the Allen Institute wants to help: it’s launching an online database, the Allen Cell Explorer, where deep learning AI predicts the layout of human stem cells. You only need a pair of identifying structures, like the position of the nucleus, to fill out the … Read More → "AI predicts the layout of human stem cells"

Eyeball transplanted onto tail lets blind tadpoles see again

eyes-tadpole-tails-1.jpg

On Thursday, Blackiston published the results of a few years’ worth of those microscopic surgeries, and the finding is bizarre: If you transplant an eye onto what will become the tadpole’s tail, that organ — misplaced though it may be — can allow the animal to see.

Admittedly, it’s impossible for humans to look through a … Read More → "Eyeball transplanted onto tail lets blind tadpoles see again"

Drones cleared to carry lab samples between Swiss hospitals

swiss-post-hospital-drones-7.jpg

Swiss Post revealed last year that it had teamed up with California’s Matternet to trial delivery drones, at the same time noting that it didn’t expect any widespread use for around five years. We’re not there yet, but things are moving along just nicely, with the Swiss aviation authority giving the green light for Matternet’s drones to ferry laboratory samples between two hospitals in the city … Read More → "Drones cleared to carry lab samples between Swiss hospitals"

Man receives someone else’s reprogrammed stem cells

dims.jpg

The concept of using stem cells for transplants just became a truly practical reality: a Japanese man with age-related macular degeneration has received the first transplant of stem cells from another human donor. Doctors repurposed the donor’s skin cells by turning them into induced pluripotent stem cells (that is, forced into a state where they can become many kinds of cells) that then became retinal cells. If all goes … Read More → "Man receives someone else’s reprogrammed stem cells"
