3D-printed materials that change texture on demand

changeable-texture.jpg

When it comes to creating surfaces, it’s a simple task to either make ones that are smooth or ones that are bumpy. But now researchers at MIT have created one that can be both. The 3D-printed surface they have created can be either smooth, bumpy, ridged, or channeled and can dynamically change texture through the application of pressure.

Mutable surface textures are important in controlling unwanted animals growing on … Read More → "3D-printed materials that change texture on demand"

When the family car is a solar-powered boat

solarboat.jpg

What do you do if you live off the coast of Panama and you need to get the family around? If you’re Jaimie Mantzel, you build yourself a solar powered boat… or three.

Mantzel had previously built a 16′ catamaran sailboat with a plywood and fiberglass hull, which he later converted to a solar powered motorboat. Taking what he learned, Mantzel built a larger pontoon boat with many clever innovations. He also started on a … Read More → "When the family car is a solar-powered boat"

A collection of noses is on display in Copenhagen

rsz_nasothek-2.jpg

In addition to the collections of ancient Mediterranean art, 19th century Danish and French sculptures, and special exhibitions, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum in Copenhagen has an unusual display case. Behind the glass are 100 plaster noses lined up in precise rows, forming what the museum refers to as the Nasothek.

The noses weren’t crafted for this purpose, though the Nasothek display could blend in at a modern … Read More → "A collection of noses is on display in Copenhagen"

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is actually being built in California next year

Hyperloop-Elon-Musk-Train-e1432304356542-980x580.jpg

It beggars belief, but it appears that Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is actually going to be built. The first test track will only be five miles long, and it won’t operate at the supersonic speeds that Musk envisioned, but still, it’s coming—Musk’s “cross between a Concorde, railgun, and an air hockey table” really is coming.

Back in January, Elon Musk said that he planned … Read More → "Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is actually being built in California next year"

The science behind why people hate the word ‘Moist’

water-drops-wallpapers-photos.jpg

People really do not like discussing moisture. A Buzzfeed post called “Why Moist Is The Worst Word Ever” received more than 4 million views; when The New Yorker asked readers to nominate a word to scrub from the English language in 2012, the overwhelming consensus was to ditch moist. The seemingly ordinary adjective inspires an excessive outpouring of ire. Why?

These are the most creative paintings of all time, according to a computer

the_scream.jpg

As much as they may try, some people just don’t “get” art. Understanding pieces by even the most famous masters of the genre elude them. Now computer scientists from Rutgers University are taking the guesswork out of understanding art by using an algorithm to determine the most creative paintings, according to a study recently published in the arxiv.

The study authors define creativity as “the originality of the product … Read More → "These are the most creative paintings of all time, according to a computer"

Researchers create a computer that works by using water

watercomputer.jpg

A decade in the making, but they’ve finally cracked it. You might not naturally pair computers with water—at least not in a positive way—but researchers at Stanford University have managed to create a computer that works using water droplets.

Normally, your computer transfers data around a circuit board using electrons. But scientists have managed to turn this on its head by making a computer in which … Read More → "Researchers create a computer that works by using water"

Physicists demonstrate how time can seem to run backward, and the future can affect the past

that is, after the item had passed through the first but before it struck the back wall. That task seemed insurmountable. But now that experiment has been tried out, and the results are rather mind-boggling.

The team in Australia turned thought experiment into lab reality by using lasers. Their subject matter was not a photon but a … Read More → "Physicists demonstrate how time can seem to run backward, and the future can affect the past"
