IAR Systems launches development tool suite for STMicroelectronics STM8 family

Embedded Systems Conference, San Jose, CA – April 27, 2010 – IAR Systems® today announced that IAR Embedded Workbench® is now available for STMicroelectronics STM8 microcontrollers. Support for the STM8 family extends the support already available for the ARM® Cortex-M3(TM) based STM32 range of microcontrollers. The consistent tool chain for STM8 and STM32 microcontrollers allows developers to use the same reliable and powerful tools for developing embedded software across both architectures.

A common user interface and a single naming convention of embedded specific language extensions make switching between the 8-bit target and the 32-bit target an easier, … Read More → "IAR Systems launches development tool suite for STMicroelectronics STM8 family"

EDA FPGA DOA

Recently, Cadence announced they were acquiring startup EDA company Taray.  It was one of the brighter and smarter (albeit most predictable) moves in the sad, sordid history of commercial EDA’s disastrous dance with programmable logic tool technology.  EDA’s future in the FPGA-related tools business was once bright and promising. Today, however, it is all but decided that EDA has primarily sat on the sidewalk while the FPGA parade marched by, occasionally running into the street in a frenetic dance that would have made the Three Stooges green with envy.

Silicon Lineup

There’s a pretty simple bottom line when designing an IC. Yes, there are functionality requirements, cost goals, performance targets, and any number of must-haves, all of which must be weighed, adjusted, and satisfied. But, given the millions of dollars it costs to buy a set of masks, at the end of it all is one overall abiding mandate: Don’t Screw Up. (That’s the PG version.)

And of course, courtesy of our mushrooming technology complexity, we have at our disposal increasingly diverse ways of screwing up. And … Read More → "Silicon Lineup"
