Freescale MQX Software Solutions gains support from IAR Systems

June 22, 2010 – IAR Systems today announced that Freescale MQX Software Solutions has been integrated together with IAR Embedded Workbench, to provide a reliable and powerful development tool suite for embedded applications running on Freescale’s ColdFire devices.

The integration allows developers of embedded systems built on ColdFire MCUs to benefit from the rich set of features provided by the Freescale MQX Software Solution, and to quickly add working communication capabilities, file system and a number of operating system utilities to their designs. Freescale MQX Software Solutions is a full-featured solution for embedded systems running on ColdFire devices. It comprises an RTOS, a file system, USB host and device stacks, and a TCP/IP communication stack.

The integration between IAR Embedded Workbench for ColdFire and Freescale MQX Software Solutions consist mainly of three parts. The first part of the integration has been to port the source code for the software to make it available for direct inclusion in an IAR Embedded Workbench project where it can be built, downloaded to target, and debugged together with the rest of the application. The second part has been to add RTOS awareness in IAR C-SPY Debugger. A plug-in provides vital information about the operating systems internals during a debug session. It makes it possible to watch for example tasks, semaphores and mailboxes. The third part has been to create a number of example projects that will give users a flying start to using the MQX software in a project built with tools from IAR Systems.

Freescale MQX Software Solutions is a complimentary and complete RTOS, File System, and communications stack solution available under license from Freescale and can be downloaded from Freescale’s website.

Jeff Bock, Global Marketing Manager, Industrial and Multi-Market Microcontrollers, Freescale, comments, “IAR Systems is a key partner for us. IAR Embedded Workbench is one of the most appreciated tool suites available for embedded development. The integration with Freescale MQX Software Solutions opens new possibilities to develop advanced software in a shorter time on ColdFire platforms”,

“MQX provides a proven solution for embedded designs incorporating ColdFire devices. The new integration with the powerful IAR Embedded Workbench provides developers of embedded systems with quick and reliable access to a multitude of software components, while benefiting from a leading quality tool chain” said Matts Ullström, Product Director, IAR Systems

IAR Embedded Workbench for ColdFire is a set of highly sophisticated and easy-to-use development tools. It incorporates IAR C/C++ Compiler, assembler, linker, librarian, text editor, project manager, and debugger combined in an integrated development environment (IDE) for programming embedded applications.

Actel Announces Power Management Solution for SmartFusion Intelligent Mixed Signal FPGAs

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 22, 2010 –Actel today announced a power management solution for its newly introduced SmartFusion™ intelligent mixed signal FPGAs. Actel’s Mixed Signal Power Manager (MPM) Solution includes a complete reference design with graphical configurator to enter power sequencing and trimming requirements. The design takes full advantage of the capabilities of SmartFusion devices and is targeted to the MPM Daughter Card which can be used with either the SmartFusion Evaluation Kit or SmartFusion Development Kit.  This complete power management solution enables the integration of power rail management into embedded designs.

The SmartFusion MPM solution delivers advanced power management that is easily configured via a configuration GUI, enabling system designers to effortlessly integrate and configure intelligent power management with their ARM® Cortex™-M3 based embedded designs. Actel’s graphical design configuration approach enables power management thresholds to be set, voltage trimming to be configured and sequencing functionality to be updated without changing the circuitry programmed into the FPGA fabric.

SmartFusion MPM demonstrates power-up sequencing, management and power down sequencing of up to 32 independent power regulators (rails) with 8 rails supporting closed loop voltage trimming using PWM. Also demonstrated are five user configurable flags per regulator channel, exponential decay filtering, and up to 32 digital ‘trigger’ outputs using single level combinatorial logic, enabling the combination of internal states with 32 corresponding off-chip digital inputs to build complex system-level state signaling.

MPM for SmartFusion using the MPM Daughter Card with SmartFusion Evaluation Kit or SmartFusion Development Kit offers these key benefits:

  • Intelligent power management leveraging 100 MHz 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 in SmartFusion intelligent mixed signal FPGA
  • Configurable power management using intrinsically low power, high-reliability, flash-based SmartFusion intelligent mixed signal FPGA on A2F-DEV-KIT or
  • A2F-EVAL-KIT mother board
  • Power management functions reconfigurable via standalone PC GUI over JTAG or directly (register peek/poke) via I2C
  • Implements power management in hardware for comprehensive evaluation
  •  More features and channels than current ASSP solutions
    • Nonvolatile
    • Live at power-up (LAPU)
    • Low power
  • Single chip and low power solution simplifies board design
  • Low power FPGAs reduce thermal management and cooling requirements
  • Proven in hardware, ready for use
