NEC Electronics Europe Announces 78K0R – SENSE IT! Development Kit

DÜSSELDORF (Germany), January 11, 2010 — NEC Electronics Europe announces the release of the 78K0R/Lx3 — SENSE IT! development kit. SENSE IT! is a single-board, LCD control development platform designed specifically for the evaluation of NEC Electronics’ 16-bit 78K0R/Lx3 microcontroller. It includes an on-chip liquid crystal display (LCD) driver circuit, optimized especially for the fields of handheld healthcare diagnostic instruments such as blood glucose meter, building utility meters and heating controls, and HMI (human machine interface) for industrial automation and motor drives.

The 78K0R/Lx3 is a highly integrated 16-bit microcontroller family, which offers with 25.4 DMIPS at 20MHz best in class performance at ultra low power, with 0.19 mA current consumption in operation mode running at 1MHz, 0.37 µA current consumption in stop mode and 0.9 µA current consumption in halt mode at 32 kHz with RTC on. NEC Electronics’ 16-bit microcontroller family has all the necessary functions to construct systems using LCD segmented displays, including LCD control that supports LCD booster, resistor bias and capacitor split drive modes. A high performance analog front-end can be implemented, having 12 channel (ch) x 12-bit SAR A/D converter, 2 ch x 12-bit D/A converter, 3 ch x operational amplifiers and internal voltage reference (2.0V and 2.5V). Additional features include up to 12 ch x 16-bit timer (Timer Array Unit), selectable internal clock speed of 1MHz or 8MHz (up to 20MHz external clock operation), 2 ch x DMA controller, Real Time Clock timer, Multi-master I2C, 16 x 16-bit hardware multiplier, 32 / 32-bit hardware divider and on-chip safety features including Low-Voltage-Indicator and Power-On-Clear.

The new SENSE IT! kit includes the 128-pin 78K0R/LH3 device with 128KB of Flash and 7KB of RAM. Several peripheral functions are also mounted on the board including a 400 segment LCD, thermometer, light meter, voltage meter, buzzer, 5-way mini joystick, DIP switches, a prototyping area and audio output for sound/voice playback using ADPCM. The kit also contains 16KB code limited version of the IAR Embedded Workbench software development tool and several demonstration programs. The starter kit can be powered using the on-board USB port, which also can be utilized to load the demonstration programs. In addition the on-board interface for the MINICUBE2 offers low cost support for source code debugging and emulation through dedicated hardware and the IAR environment.

SENSE IT! provides everything development engineers need to quickly get started with product evaluation and design of state-of-the-art low power LCD applications.
