Infinite Power Solutions Demonstrates Unique Solid-State Embedded Power Solutions At Design West – Embedded Systems Conference

Littleton, Colo., March 20, 2012? Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. (IPS), an industry leader in solid-state, rechargeable thin-film battery solutions today announced it will be exhibiting at the DESIGN West – Embedded Systems Conference (Booth #2316) from March 27-29, 2012 in San Jose, Calif. The company will highlight its award-winning product family of THINERGY® Micro-Energy Cells (MECs). THINERGY MECs are a unique type of solid-state batteries that are permanently embedded into a product for life, eliminating the prohibitive costs of battery maintenance, replacement and disposal. The company will also demonstrate a variety of energy harvesting and storage solutions and evaluation kits that enable embedded designers to quickly and easily develop autonomous, self-powered solutions.

Unlike conventional battery implementations, the embedded system power is provided by a paper-thin yet powerful THINERGY Micro-Energy Cell (MEC), a permanent battery solution that can be recharged in traditional ways or independently using ambient energy harvesting. The combination of MEC, plus energy harvester, enables a continuous, autonomous power supply solution. THINERGY MECs are eco-friendly and the battery of choice to power many applications, including wireless sensor devices like those using Bluetooth Low Energy technology. In addition to their small, flexible and thin form factors, MECs provide high power, unrivalled cycle life, and longer service life than conventional batteries. As a result, THINERGY MECs enable a low cost, hassle-free, permanent power solution for a variety of embedded systems in remote and portable microelectronic applications.

“Solid-state always wins,” stated Tim Bradow, VP Marketing for IPS. “Vacuum tubes were entirely replaced by solid-state transistors within integrated circuits, and high energy consuming light bulbs are now being replaced by more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We’ve seen it happen time and again, and now it is happening in the battery space. Conventional and sometimes toxic organic wet chemistry batteries are being replaced by longer lasting, eco-friendly, inorganic solid-state batteries like THINERGY MECs. It’s inevitable and happening now.”

MECs are ideally suited for energy-harvesting applications because the often small and intermittent harvested energy is more efficiently stored in THINERGY MECs than any other storage element. Ambient sources of energy include light (from a photovoltaic array), vibration (from a piezo-electric element), heat (via thermo-electric generator), and radio-frequencies (captured by a RF harvester). MECs are available in a variety of capacities from 0.13mAh to 2.5mAh, and provide near loss-less energy storage. Self-discharge is so low and insignificant that energy can be reliably stored for decades on a single charge. Evaluation kits are available for customers to experiment with energy harvesting and to realize how easy it is to implement a permanent embedded power solution.

IPS offers a Standard Product Selection Guide that summarizes key specifications and performance metrics surrounding its THINERGY MEC200 product family. This matrix illustrates that THINERGY MECs truly outperform coin cells and other rechargeable micro-batteries across key specifications, including operating temperature range, discharge current, cycle life, fast recharge time and self-discharge current. THINERGY MEC products are readily available and can be ordered directly from the factory or from a variety of franchised distributors. Please visit the IPS Web site for a complete list of distributors and other product and company information.
