IEEE and Barr Group Emphasize the Importance of Software Safety at Special Event

GERMANTOWN, Maryland – On January 26, 2017, IEEE and Barr Group, The Embedded Systems Experts®, will co-host a special presentation of Barr Group’s “Top 10 Ways to Design Safer Embedded Software” in Toronto. In this one-day technical seminar, Barr Group will discuss 10 highly effective embedded software design techniques that can be applied to the development of safer and more reliable embedded systems. The seminar will take place at the University of Toronto’s Best Institute and is open to both IEEE members and non-members.

“Engineers should strive to use the industry’s most effective design techniques to help ensure that every embedded systems application is safe,” said Barr Group CEO Andrew Girson. “Unfortunately, as the results of Barr Group’s 2016 Embedded Systems Safety & Security Survey indicate, best practices are not necessarily the norm, even in the design of safety-critical products. There are some end applications that may not pose a direct safety risk to end users in the case of failure, but in other applications, the consequences of a serious malfunction or failure can become catastrophic or even fatal. Our mission at Barr Group is to provide engineers with the knowledge and skills they need to help ensure the safe operation of all their embedded systems applications, whether for automotive, medical, IoT, or other markets.”

“As an organization dedicated to the advancement of engineers engaged in the design of embedded and IoT devices, IEEE is always on the lookout for training content that can benefit our members,” said Olivier Trescases, Vice Chair of the IEEE Toronto Chapter. “By partnering with Barr Group on their ‘Top 10 Ways to Design Safer Embedded Software’ technical training, we are accomplishing an important IEEE objective, which is to improve the opportunities for engineers to learn and apply best practices in their daily work.”

Attendees of this technical seminar will learn why and how to apply 10 practical, lightweight techniques for designing safer and more reliable embedded systems, with a focus on minimizing the risk of injury or loss in the case of embedded software malfunction.
