RTECC hosts Altera with two sessions on FPGA and Industrial Ethernet

The Real-Time & Embedded Computing Conference (RTECC) is pleased to announce Altera and partner Ethernet POWERLINK will be presenting a two part session on August 25th in San Diego:

Synchronizing Mechatronic Systems in Real-Time Using FPGAs and Industrial Ethernet Communications.

Part 1 – 12:30PM

Industrial Machines have typically relied on the ability to do motion, and remote I/O using field buses such as CAN and RS-485. Over time the requirements for faster machines have become more stringent. The increased amounts of data, the number of control nodes, and the increased requirements for higher bus frequencies have rendered these filed buses obsolete. This in turn forced machine builders to consider using a faster medium for I/O and control. This talk will demonstrate how an open source Real-Time Ethernet protocol (Ethernet POWERLINK) can be used to synchronize machines in real-time thus allowing faster and more robust machines based on Altera FPGA technologies.

Part 2 – 1:30PM

Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have made purpose-built solutions cost competitive, so it’s no longer necessary to compromise functionality to leverage the cost of high volume application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Due to this advantage, they are now the device of choice for many manufacturers looking to add Real-Time Industrial Ethernet flexibility into their designs. We will show how the use of FPGAs can effectively implement Industrial Ethernet protocols for embedded real-time applications.

The Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG) was founded in 2003 in Switzerland as an independent association with a democratic structure. Its goals are the standardization, promotion and further development of POWERLINK technology, which was first presented to the public in 2001. POWERLINK is a patent-free, manufacturer-independent and completely software-based communication system for hard real time that has been available as a free open source solution since 2008.
