Avnet Electronics Marketing Releases New Xilinx Kintex UltraScale FPGA DSP Development Kit

PHOENIX—April 20, 2015—Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT) today released the new Xilinx Kintex® UltraScale™ FPGA DSP development kit with JESD204B high-speed analog. The kit provides a comprehensive platform for rapid prototyping of high performance digital signal processing applications with wideband analog data acquisition in sectors including communications, medical imaging, test and measurement and defense/aerospace.

The system combines the Xilinx KCU105 evaluation board featuring the Kintex® UltraScale™ XCKU040 FPGA, with the Analog Devices AD-FMCDAQ2 high-speed analog FMC card, enabling wideband data acquisition over JESD204B high-speed serial connectivity through the Kintex UltraScale FPGA’s GTH gigabit transceivers. Data acquisition is managed under Ubuntu Linux running on a MicroBlaze soft processor within the FPGA, supporting fast data exchange over Ethernet to Analog Devices IIO Oscilloscope and MATLAB and Simulink for data analysis and visualization. To further accelerate development, the kit also includes high-level design methodologies, IP and verified reference designs.

“The Xilinx Kintex® UltraScale™ FPGA DSP development kit with JESD204B high-speed analog takes the development kit concept a step further, providing engineers with a complete design platform targeted to their specific applications,” said Luc Langlois, director, Global Technical Marketing, Avnet Electronics Marketing. “With a complete JESD204B wideband data acquisition system ready to use out of the box, engineers can focus their development efforts on adding differentiating features to their systems.”

“This unique combination of world-class analog and FPGA devices gives systems engineers and algorithm developers all of the tools necessary to tackle state-of-the-art, performance-critical system designs requiring the highest achievable dynamic range,” said Robin Getz, engineering director, Analog Devices. “The AD-FMCDAQ2–EBZ module offers an industry-leading wideband signal chain that seamlessly streams JESD204B data to and from the UltraScale FPGA for further analysis in MATLAB and Simulink over Ethernet. Additionally, the module’s open hardware, HDL and software design give developers a head start in integrating these blocks into their own products, which can reduce time to market and risk.”

“The Xilinx Kintex® UltraScale™ FPGA DSP development kit with JESD204B high-speed analog enables customers to quickly prototype their signal processing algorithms using a Kintex UltraScale device, to take advantage of high speed transceivers supporting the full JESD204B line rate and DSP specific silicon enhancements,” said Tom Hill, senior manager, DSP Solutions, Xilinx. “New features, such as the DSP48E2 slices, can be used to improve design efficiency up to 30 percent while consuming up to 40 percent less power.”

The Xilinx Kintex® UltraScale™ FPGA DSP development kit with JESD204B high-speed analog includes:

  • Xilinx Kintex UltraScale FPGA KCU105 evaluation board including Kintex XCKU040-2FFVA1156E device
  • Analog Devices AD-FMCDAQ2-EBZ FMC module including AD9680 dual 14-Bit 1.0 GSPS, JESD204B A/D converter, AD9144 Quad 16-Bit, 2.8 GSPS JESD204B Transmit D/A converter, AD9523 low jitter clock generator, DC-DC switchers and low drop out regulators
  • 2 SMA RF coax cables
  • USB A-to-micro-B Cables (2)
  • 12V power supply
  • Xilinx Vivado® Design Suite: System Edition (device-locked to Kintex UltraScale XCKU040)

Package Evolution for MOSFETs and Diodes
Sponsored by Mouser Electronics and Vishay
A limiting factor for both MOSFETs and diodes is power dissipation per unit area and your choice of packaging can make a big difference in power dissipation. In this episode of Chalk Talk, Amelia Dalton and Brian Zachrel from Vishay investigate how package evolution has led to new advancements in diodes and MOSFETs including minimizing package resistance, increasing power density, and more! They also explore the benefits of using Vishay’s small and efficient PowerPAK® and eSMP® packages and the migration path you will need to keep in mind when using these solutions in your next design.
