ProTek Devices’ New TVS Array Provides Circuit Protection for Industrial Communications

TEMPE, Ariz. – Dec. 15, 2014 – ProTek Devices™ today introduced an asymmetrical line protection transient voltage suppressor array (TVS array) designed for local interconnect network (LIN) BUS protection in industrial applications such as field devices, protocol converters and gateways, and more. The new circuit protection device is rated at 200 watts peak pulse power per line. This is for an 8/20 secondary lightning surge.

The part number is the PESD1LIN and it is available in a bidirectional configuration. The PESD1LIN is an ideal replacement for multilayer varistors (MLV 0805) in LIN BUS applications. It protects one power or I/O port and asymmetrical line protection is pin 1 to 2, 15V and pin 2 to 1, 24V. In addition, the TVS array provides a low clamping voltage. The minimum breakdown voltage at 15mA is 17.2 volts for pin 1 to 2 and 25.5 volts for pin 2 to 1. It also provides IEC compatibility with standards 61000-4-2 (electrostatic discharge [ESD]): Air – 15kV, contact – 8kV, with 61000-4-4 (electrical fast transients [EFT]): 40A – 5/50ns, and with 61000-4-5 (surge): 24A, 8/20 micro seconds – level 2 (line-gnd) and level 3 (line-line).

The flammability rating is UL 94V-0. The part is also RoHS and REACH compliant. Operating and storage temperatures are -55 to 150 degrees Celsius. The PESD1LIN TVS array is provided in a molded JEDEC SOD-323 package at an approximate weight of only 5 milligrams. Other key mechanical characteristics include lead-free pure-tin plating (annealed) and a solder reflow temperature of (pure-tin – Sn, 100) 260 to 270 degrees Celsius.

Pricing and Availability

ProTek Devices’ PESD1LIN circuit protection component is now available in mass quantities and pricing varies by amounts. It is provided in 3,000 minimum quantities via eight millimeter tape and reel, per EIA standard 481. A data sheet for the PESD1LIN can be download from the ProTek Devices website.
