ARIA™, the First Accurate & Affordable Home Radon & Indoor Pollution Monitor, Alerts Homeowners to Cancer-Causing Gas in Real Time

Modena, Italy, October 22, 2014 – We don’t think about radon in our home. We prefer to think that it can’t happen to us, or that we don’t live in a radon “hot zone.” We have smoke detectors to protect against fire, and carbon monoxide detectors so we don’t die in our sleep, but until now there has never been a simple, accurate and affordable home monitor to test for radon, the deadly radioactive gas that causes up to 21,000 deaths from lung cancer per year in the United States.  Home radon testing was confined to expensive professional services or time-consuming, highly error-prone do-it yourself tests.

Now the ARIA radon monitor delivers immediate data and ongoing monitoring of the levels of radon and indoor pollutants (such as Volatile Organic Compounds, VOC) in any room.  Designed to be part of the Connected Home, ARIA sits on a shelf and its LEDs provide immediate visual cues on air quality while it also streams detailed information to a mobile app which displays detailed graphical reports and sends alerts.

Radon is common and very dangerous

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, radiation-filled gas that seeps into our homes from the surrounding soil, and exposure to radon in our homes causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year in the US.  The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 1 in 15 American homes may have elevated levels of radon.  Not confined to the US alone, the indoor radon problem exists all around the world, with levels varying greatly.  The World Health Organization has studied the problem, assessed the risks and published guidelines to mitigate the problem.  Without accurate testing, there is no way of knowing the radon risk.
