RTOS Express Logic ThreadX® RTOS Supports Microchip’s MPLAB® Harmony Framework

San Diego, CA – October 28, 2014 — Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOSes), today announced that its popular ThreadX® RTOS has been integrated into Microchip’s new MPLAB® Harmony Integrated Software Framework, a set of integrated building blocks that simplify and accelerate software development for Microchip 32-bit PIC32 microcontrollers. ThreadX provides a quality, production-ready, field-proven RTOS that is easy to use and seamlessly integrated with MPLAB Harmony.

MPLAB Harmony is a flexible, fully integrated firmware development platform for all of Microchip’s PIC32 microcontrollers. It provides the industry’s most advanced framework of software drivers and middleware components that are easy to use and configure, and that work together in complete harmony. MPLAB Harmony offers seamless integration of RTOSes, including Express Logic’s industry-leading ThreadX RTOS. Additionally, support for all of these Microchip and third-party components is provided by Microchip.

ThreadX is a priority-based, fully preemptive, deterministic RTOS that is small in size and low in overhead. ThreadX provides basic system services such as preemptive and round-robin scheduling, semaphores, message queues, mutexes, timers, interrupts, and memory management. ThreadX also offers advanced features such as Preemption-Threshold™ Scheduling, integrated Event Trace, and Downloadable Application Modules. ThreadX brings these features to MPLAB Harmony, providing a high-quality, easy-to-use software framework that helps accelerate developers’ time to market. For these reasons and more, ThreadX has been used in more than 2 billion product deployments, spanning applications in consumer electronics, medical devices, industrial equipment, and home automation.

“ThreadX is a fantastic addition to Microchip’s award-winning software framework for our PIC32 microcontrollers because of the focus on quality, reliability and performance that has been put into the development of both MPLAB Harmony and ThreadX,” said Rod Drake, director of Microchip’s MCU32 Division. “Time to market and development costs can be greatly reduced for developers who take advantage of this combination because we’ve cut the bugs, hassle, and uncertainty out of low-level code implementation, while improving performance and determinism.”

“ThreadX for Harmony completes a highly integrated, high-quality, fully supported framework for software developers targeting Microchip’s PIC32 products,” commented William E. Lamie, president/CEO of Express Logic. “With ThreadX, Harmony users can confidently implement demanding real-time applications and know that their RTOS will be able to keep up with system events under the most extreme run-time conditions.”

Price and Availability

ThreadX for Harmony is available from the microchipDIRECT e-commerce site in its royalty-free, limited source form, with prices starting at $6,000, or from Express Logic in full source code form, at license prices starting at $12,500.
