Hillcrest Labs Brings Motion, Gesture and Cursor Control to Skyworth Smart TVs

Rockville, MD – October 6, 2014 – Hillcrest Labs today announced that Skyworth, a leading TV brand in China, will use Hillcrest’s patented motion software in its new line of Smart TVs. Hillcrest’s Freespace(R) MotionEngine(TM) Smart TV software will enable advanced motion, gesture and cursor control to navigate and interact with the wide range of content, games and apps available on Skyworth’s Android(TM)-based Smart TVs.

Freespace enables point-and-click, gesture and 3D motion control of Smart TVs through simple, in-air movements of a remote control. This is particularly important for Android TVs, as the user must control the experience from a distance using a remote control rather than holding a device, such as a smartphone. Freespace uniquely replicates the point-to-select and motion controls commonly used by Android applications on mobile devices, to enable the same interactivity while users sit comfortably on the couch. Skyworth Smart TVs will also include CSR’s dual-mode Bluetooth(R) solution announced last year, which pairs Hillcrest’s Freespace MotionEngine software with Bluetooth low energy (BLE) RF technology to provide faster and more immersive user experiences.

“As a leading TV brand in China, we’re proud Skyworth selected Freespace to provide advanced motion capabilities on its newest generation of Smart TVs,” said Chad Lucien, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hillcrest Labs. “Together, we look forward to bringing more compelling user interface navigation, motion gaming and gesture control to the rapidly growing Android Smart TV market.”

“Hillcrest’s Freespace MotionEngine is key to enabling enhanced user experiences, as it enables improved content navigation, better gaming options, and simple Web browsing across Skyworth’s Android-powered Smart TVs,” said Meng Wang, Marketing Director at Skyworth. “With an extensive worldwide intellectual property portfolio and as a leader in motion-enabled products, Hillcrest will help us to provide the next evolution of living room entertainment with more innovative and intuitive Smart TV capabilities.”

Today’s announcement is further evidence of the importance of Hillcrest’s technology across advanced Smart TV platforms. It also marks another major, Asia-based consumer electronics OEM to adopt Hillcrest’s Freespace technology. Skyworth is the sixth major Smart TV platform worldwide to use Hillcrest’s motion software.

Other companies that have licensed Freespace for use in their products include: Atmel, Coolpad, Hisense, Intel, Lenovo, LG Electronics, Logitech, Oppo, Roku, SMK Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., TCL Multimedia, Universal Electronics (UEI), and more. Hillcrest has a commanding worldwide intellectual property portfolio that includes over 110 granted out of over 220 total filed patents exclusively owned by Hillcrest Labs. This includes patents which are critical to the orientation compensation, automatic calibration and intelligent motion stabilization features that ensure motion control technology is simple and intuitive to use on Smart TVs.
